Along the embankment? Sometimes I think that 3am is the busies time of the day! I imagine that outside congestion charging hours the data collected by the cameras is used in the same way as the Traffic Master cameras along most A roads - these capture number plates but don't keep a record of who's going where, just how long it takes for cars to move between the cameras. I'd guess we could ask TfL what exactly they're doing with the data but I think it's important that it's collected. If you don't know how much traffic there is at any time of the day then you can't say whether it's getting worse or better. On the subject of the power use, I don't know if any of them are solar powered but the energy consumed by a camera is minute - the possible savings if they were switched off when they're not needed (if you believe that they're not needed 24x7) will be tiny. “Firstly there is no congestion at 3am” – Have you ever been into the West End at 3am? I take it they need power to use them. Are they working off solar power? So much for being green if they are not!
